Démarche

Guylaine Couture fait du livre d’artiste depuis plusieurs années. Cette forme artistique lui permet de créer des œuvres où le contenu et le contenant fusionnent afin de faire réfléchir sur un questionnement.

Après des années à créer sur papier, elle suit une courte formation en reliure qui l’a mise sur la piste du livre d’artiste. Ce dernier est devenu sa discipline principale bien qu’elle poursuit sa pratique sur papier.

Guylaine aime travailler sur des sujets qui nous questionnent comme les mouvements sociaux, l’écologie, le deuil ou l'immigration. Ces sujets demandent une introspection. Il est important pour l’artiste que chaque livre soit différent, que la forme change, évolue et s’adapte à son point de vue.

L'artiste jongle avec les idées qu’elle veut transmettre. Elle rédige délicatement le message, analyse le sens des mots et des images, élabore avec minutie la forme finale du livre. C’est un processus qui demande du temps, de la réflexion et plusieurs maquettes afin d’arriver au résultat souhaité.

Elle  est obsédée par la réutilisation de documents imprimés, par la conservation d'une zone oubliée et par l’utilisation du matériel ayant déjà vécu. Ses œuvres tentent de détourner cette abondante matière trop facilement larguée.

Créer un livre permet d’échanger avec les gens par l'ensemble de sa forme. L’artiste réfléchit longuement à la réaction devant le livre et fait progresser l’œuvre afin que l’émotion soit au rendez-vous. Pour elle, le public doit vivre une expérience.

Statement

Guylaine Couture has been making artist’s books for several years. This art form allows her to create works in which the content and the container merge to provoke reflection on a question.

After years of creating on paper, she took a short course in bookbinding, which led her on the path of the artist’s book. This became her main discipline, although she continues to work on paper.

Guylaine likes to work on subjects that challenge us, such as social movements, ecology, grief and immigration. These subjects require introspection. It’s important to the artist that each book is different, that the form changes, evolves and adapts to her point of view.

The artist juggles with the ideas she wants to convey. She delicately drafts the message, analyses the meaning of the words and images, and meticulously elaborates the final form of the book. It’s a process that takes time, thought and several mock-ups to achieve the desired result.

She is obsessed with reusing printed documents, preserving a forgotten area and using material that has already lived. Her works attempt to divert this abundant material that is too easily discarded.

Creating a book is a way of interacting with people through the whole of its form. The artist gives a great deal of thought to how people will react to the book, and progresses the work so that the emotion is there. For her, the public must experience the book for itself.
